~In-Depth~

Intro

Hey there! Thanks for visiting my blog.
For In-Depth, I spent over 40 hours learning about and creating animations! I chose animation because I can use my creativity and imagination to build worlds and stories to share with the world. I focused on three different areas: environment creation, character creation, and game design.

|

Environment Creation

I started my learning by creating a street scene. I built this environment using simple objects (cubes, cylinders, etc.), different types of lights, and fog.

At the end of In-Depth, I used my new-found skills to create a lighthouse. This took about 4 hours to create, and I built this environment using transformations, lighting, and textures.

Character Creation

I specifically learned how to create characters from my mentor.

Character creation was more difficult than I expected.

If I made one mistake, I could potentially cause problems with the model and give myself additional work. I struggled the most with proportions.

After 9 hours, I fixed the proportions, learned how to create the face with my mentor, and added clothing and color. For fun, I made her an alien dressed as a human.

Game Design

Although game design is not necessarily linked to animation, I learned about it so that I could gain the skills to turn my animations into video games in the future!

Additional Work

This environment is a recreation of the TALONS room! Before the break, I took pictures of the classroom, set up the general layout, and began to build the individual objects in. This scene is still a work in progress but I’ve already put a lot of time into it.

  1. kate! this is so cool, did you already have a nice computer at home to work on this during quarantine? What were some struggles you encountered when doing your in depth this year? I really liked your alien design and character building 🙂

    1. Thank you! I already have a good computer so adjusting to quarantine wasn’t a big challenge. I found that I struggled most with the details of each scene/character, because I needed to do a lot of tedious work to make it look realistic.

  2. Hey Kate! Just wanted to say it was really fun mentoring you! I’m glad that you learned something from me and I hope you’re proud of the work you’ve done 🙂

      1. One of the hardest parts for me was making the scenes/characters look realistic. Us as humans are really good at picking out visual errors, so I needed to make the models as realistic as possible or intentionally unrealistic (e.g. for comedy purposes).

    1. Thank you! Two tricks I found were duplication and modifiers. Duplication is basically copying and pasting objects (which saves a lot of time), and modifiers are tools you can use to manipulate objects in different ways. Thanks for asking! 🙂

    1. Thanks! Personally, I was inspired by video games. There are so many different types of games and adventures and stories and I really wanted to become a part of that creative community 🙂

  4. Wow Kate! What a lot of hard work you’ve dedicated to this! I am impressed with all the detail you’ve added to your animations. The TALONS classroom is so cool! Did you have to take measurements of all the objects in the room? Great work!

    1. Thanks 🙂 I didn’t take exact measurements of all the objects but I took pictures and used those as reference to get a sense of the general layout of the class.

    1. Thank you! My two favorite parts were creating the lighthouse and working with my mentor. I liked creating my lighthouse because I could finally put my skills I learnt over the course of In-Depth into one final product. I had fun with my mentor because I could work on the tedious aspects of creating a character while socializing with her.

  5. Great job, Kate! Can’t believe how much time it takes to do animations – way beyond my understanding! Your patience and determination have really paid off – onto Pixar next?

  6. wow, great job! computer animation has always seemed like such a complex process to me; it looks like you learned so much! great job!

  7. The TALONs room and the lighthouse look so lifelike! Amazing work. How long did it take to recreate the TALONs room? It looks really good! Great In-Depth!

    1. Thank you! I’m hoping to learn more about textures so that I can give the scene more feeling (eg. give the “wood” objects a wooden look, and the “metal” objects a metallic look, rather than just a simple color.
