Intro
Hey there! Thanks for visiting my blog.
For In-Depth, I spent over 40 hours learning about and creating animations! I chose animation because I can use my creativity and imagination to build worlds and stories to share with the world. I focused on three different areas: environment creation, character creation, and game design.

Environment Creation

|
Character Creation
I specifically learned how to create characters from my mentor.

Game Design
Although game design is not necessarily linked to animation, I learned about it so that I could gain the skills to turn my animations into video games in the future!

Additional Work
This environment is a recreation of the TALONS room! Before the break, I took pictures of the classroom, set up the general layout, and began to build the individual objects in. This scene is still a work in progress but I’ve already put a lot of time into it.
Great work Kate! Did you have to individually make each desk, or could you copy-paste them?

Thanks! I made one desk and then duplicated them 🙂

kate! this is so cool, did you already have a nice computer at home to work on this during quarantine? What were some struggles you encountered when doing your in depth this year? I really liked your alien design and character building 🙂

Thank you! I already have a good computer so adjusting to quarantine wasn’t a big challenge. I found that I struggled most with the details of each scene/character, because I needed to do a lot of tedious work to make it look realistic.

Hey Kate! Just wanted to say it was really fun mentoring you! I’m glad that you learned something from me and I hope you’re proud of the work you’ve done 🙂

Thank you so much for being my mentor! I’m so happy I found a hardworking and dedicated mentor like you 🙂

Thank Mentor, Deon. Kate loved working with you. Kate, what was the hardest part and why?

One of the hardest parts for me was making the scenes/characters look realistic. Us as humans are really good at picking out visual errors, so I needed to make the models as realistic as possible or intentionally unrealistic (e.g. for comedy purposes).

Wow, Kate! Your animations look super good! How long did creating and animating the characters take you in total?

Thanks! The character took about nine hours to create. It’s a lot of tedious work to get the model to look realistic.

So impressive! 3D work is so difficult, did you find any tricks or shortcuts throughout your project?

Thank you! Two tricks I found were duplication and modifiers. Duplication is basically copying and pasting objects (which saves a lot of time), and modifiers are tools you can use to manipulate objects in different ways. Thanks for asking! 🙂

Super sick work! What in particular inspired you to do animation and game design?

Thanks! Personally, I was inspired by video games. There are so many different types of games and adventures and stories and I really wanted to become a part of that creative community 🙂

Wow Kate! What a lot of hard work you’ve dedicated to this! I am impressed with all the detail you’ve added to your animations. The TALONS classroom is so cool! Did you have to take measurements of all the objects in the room? Great work!

Thanks 🙂 I didn’t take exact measurements of all the objects but I took pictures and used those as reference to get a sense of the general layout of the class.

Awesome Kate! This looks so complicated! You are too smart and cool for me 🙂 Do you plan on continuing this skill in the future?

Thanks! I’m actually considering pursuing this as a career, but for now it will be just a hobby 🙂

So cool Kate! That must have taken so much work! What was your favourite part of animation?

Thank you! My two favorite parts were creating the lighthouse and working with my mentor. I liked creating my lighthouse because I could finally put my skills I learnt over the course of In-Depth into one final product. I had fun with my mentor because I could work on the tedious aspects of creating a character while socializing with her.

That’s super cool! It must have been a lot of fun to socialize and work with your mentor while working on tedious aspects of your project!

Nicely done! What’s the hardest thing that you created?

Thanks! The hardest thing to create for me was probably my character. It was a really frustrating and tedious process but I finally finished!

Awesome work! The lighthouse model and scene is super cool. The TALONS room looks great as well. How did you get the fog effect in your renders (I assume with volumetrics)?

Thanks! I used volumetrics for the background fog in the street scene and for the lighthouse beacon.

This is so cool! I especially loved the TALONS room! What are you hoping to work on next to improve this skill?

Thank you! I’m hoping to learn more about textures so that I can give the scene more feeling (eg. give the “wood” objects a wooden look, and the “metal” objects a metallic look, rather than just a simple color.
